For those of us who are of a certain age, the TV show Who’s Line Is It Anyway was a staple of Friday night viewing that had a following to mirror the huge talent on show. So, seeing The Unity virtually full to witness 4 teams from across the North West do battle – using suggestions solely from the audience and their own quick wittedness – was in itself a pleasure, but nothing like as much of a joy as seeing the antics taking place on stage.
The concept of Improvageddon began last year, with the winning team’s charity being awarded some of the proceeds made from the evening, making it a worthy cause that generates more than a few laughs.
An what is truly refreshing is the enthusiasm with which those involved plough into proceedings, taking La Crosse with Hamsters to a new level and bringing a whole new level to Country File that, in truth, would make John Craven blush as deeply maroon as his jumpers.
From first to last the contestants keep the energy high, whilst the audience score their efforts on a clap-ometer basis. Suffice to say, from 1 to 6, nobody scored lower than 4 and the team with the lowest ranking splitting themselves amongst the remaining 3 teams.
Sticky Floor, consisting of Owen Scrivens, Mark Rawle, Matthew Exley and Ian Smith, triumphed over Impropriety, Comedy Sportz and Box of Frogs, but none of that mattered other than for the fact that RoadSafe benefitted from their efforts, handsomely.
What mattered is the fact that nobody left The Unity disappointed and that Improvageddon should really be scrawled in red across everybody’s social diary for the coming years.
A truly great night of fun, laughter and zaniness that should be supported by all who know what entertainment truly is.
9/10
