St Helens Theatre Royal until 26th May (and on tour).
With a record of three months at the top of the cinema box-office charts , The Full Monty was a great success - even more so than Four Weddings and a Funeral - and won a great audience in France and in the United States.
No wonder then that the movie, written by Simon Beaufoy, was adapted as a Broadway musical in 2000.
The Full Monty tells the story of how 6 unemployed men- Jerry, Dave, Malcolm, Harold, Ethan and Horse - from Buffalo decide to present a strip act at a local club, after seeing how much their wives were enthusiastic for a Chippendales company.
Jerry, the main character, even promises that their show will be better than the professional dancers because they will go “the full monty”, which is a strip all the way. The main question is: will they really go the full monty at the end?
The curtain goes up on an intense beginning with hysterical shouts coming from the actresses , immediately engrossing the audeince in the atmosphere: there is nothing better than a bit of interaction with the stalls to warm-up the ambiance.
And even though there were a few staging problem – actors who came on stage too early, lighting mistakes, and on top of that ... a bench demolished by Jerry when he jumped on it – the Full Monty is a colorful and entertaining show, perfect for a girl's night out.
All the emotions were tested in the show from feminist sisterhood during “Woman's world”, compassion during “You rule my world” and excitement mixed with curiousity during the most popular “Let it go”.
Even after the show when people were heading home we could here a few ladies singing “Let it go, let it go, it is allright” : the real hallmark of a great musical, written by four-time Tony Award winner Terrence McNally and David Yazbeck!
