Review: Ladies Day at St Helen's Theatre Royal

by Tracey Owen. Published Thu 12 Apr 2012 11:31

When four friends from the local biscuit factory asked for the day off so they could attend Ladies Day, little did they know that their acid tongued supervisor Barb would only let them go if she went with them.

Happily married Bev (Alexandra Swift) with her teengage daughter Abbey (Kelly Forshaw), recently widowed Mo (Mary Fortune) and man mad Jools (Katie Tracey), along with their boss Barb (Maggie Avinyo), put their glad rags on and head down to Aintree, for the start of a blossoming friendship during their Ladies Day outing.

After a few lucky bets, the girlies spend their winnings on champagne and end up rather tipsy.

As the day progresses, their friendship grows stronger, when Barb reveals that she was not always a straight-faced battleaxe and informs the ladies of some of the secrets she got up to before and during her 37 year marriage to boring Roy.

Looking for love at the races enters comedy duo Danny (Craig Sharkey) and Jay (Sam Inkson) these two characters are full of fun and have the audience in fits of laughter with their witty antics and hilarious dance moves.

The lads end up meeting up with Jools and her pals during the day where a romance starts between young Abbey and Danny while his friend Jay tries it on with gobby Jools (who has been 32 for the past few years).

Written by Katie Tracey aka Jools and produced by Pauline Daniels, Ladies Day is full of scouse humour and witty remarks that had everyone in the crowd - men and women - laughing out loud.

Ladies Day is showing in St Helens Theatre Royal until Sunday 15th April. Tickets are £15/£13 (Saturday matinee £7) on 01744 756000
