International Gallery on Slater Street is an interesting venue for an alternative record release party. Used previously by Soundcity for the fantastic Screenadelica exhibit in May, Antipop transformed the International gallery into the release party venue for three new records out this week.
Artwork showcased included: photographers Javier Horcajada and Adrian Wharton, sketches and poster art by Lee Rotherham, screens and prints by Andy Cooper, paintings by Anton Garvey and Emma Johnson, and projections by Jon and Shan Mulligan.
The main focus of the night was of course the music and the three Antipop releases: one CD EP, one CD album and one 7" vinyl.
Super Fast Girlie Show, who earlier in the day performed a series of flash mob style guerilla gig across the city to promote the release of their debut album 'All Hooves And Cucumber', displayed the 20 minute film of the live recording of the album to the excited gig goers rammed in the International gallery. With their makeshift jumble sale style merchandise store (including SFGS haircuts) stealing the show.
Elmo and the Styx, listed as an acoustic performance banished the soft in favour of the full electric set and played their new Sexy Clowns EP along with a few new tracks expected to be on the debut album. With two songs in particular, Last Boss and Watermelon, standing out as truly amazing works of art themselves.
Death defying post-punk mayhem brought about some wild rave dancing and the band show why so many are joining the voices that say there is something special about E.A.T.S.
The Vermin Suicides with their unique brand of Dub Punk eventually took to the stage and the nicely inebriated crowd proceeded to launch each other from wall to wall.
The Vermins who promised to play tracks 'only' from their debut album "Yeahman! It's..." duly failed as a sing-along version of Talking Heads' Psychokiller crept in and stole the hearts of the fans. A gritty punk rock set in the fitting surroundings saw the launch of a debut album 18 months in the making.
All three debut releases were there in force and each band could be seen shifting a tonne of gear throughout. A few pieces of more highly valued art were purchased which brightened the faces of the artists. It was a great way to launch new music, and a great night of Antipop and Anti-art.
