It’s hard to believe that this sci fi musical of Queen's greatest hits was launched nearly a decade ago. Its success is far from dead though, in fact I would go as far to say it will live forever.
Written by Queen and West End legend Ben Elton, We Will Rock You tells the story of creative youth Galileo (Popstars winner Noel Sullivan), who struggles to be an individual in a futuristic world where creativity is repressed and music is computer-generated.
Our stuttering hero, along with his heroine Scaramouche (played by the wonderfully talented Amanda Coutts), endeavour to re-introduce real music and rediscover the legend of rock music to a background of timeless Queen classics.
They soon encounter Brit and Meat members of the Bohemian rebels, who worship ancient musical texts from a time called the Rhapsody.
Chaos ensues when the evil Khashoggi and his Ga Ga cops track down the rebels and arrest them and quite predictably Galileo and Scaramouche become united by their plight.
There are some fantastic performances across the entire cast.
I was bowled over with Sullivan’s talent and likeability and Coutts version of Who Wants to Live Forever gave me goose bumps.
Earl Carpenter is comical as the evil Khashoggi, the I’d Do Anything finalist Ashley J Russell is ravishing as the dominatrix Killer Queen, Leon Lopez acts his socks off as the unfortunately named Britney and Jenny Douglas appears as Meat without the loaf.
And as for the encore, well lets just say don’t plan to get the early train home.
Ben Elton brought his comedy writing to the fore for this fun pantomime that never pretends to be anything else, but it’s always the songs that steal the limelight.
With hits like Radio Ga Ga, One Vision, I want to break free, A kind of magic and Flash this touring version of the hugely successful West End show will continue to be a champion in the box office for a long time to come.
