He pointed at a sign in the audience held up by an Australian and said “well you get the prize for coming the furthest” a shout from a Spaniard got a cheer, but when Ringo asked “Is there any-one from Liverpool” the roar showed that there were plenty to welcome home their errant son.
So started Ringo Starr and his All Starr Band at the Liverpool Empire, the British leg of this European tour.
Sir Paul does the slickest, most spectacular and professional show on the planet and you would expect nothing less from the worlds greatest showman.
Ringo does not have the same advantage, he did not write the songs, 'Octopus's Garden' being his contribution to Abbey Road. So Ringo sensibly decided long ago to go on the road with his mates. People who have played on Ringo’s 14 solo albums and Ringo has returned the compliment by playing on his friend’s albums.
So this is the greatest jamming session with some of the best musicians around. The All Starr band differs on each tour. This time around Ringo Starr And His All Starr Band has lead guitarist Rick Derringer of The McCoy’s whose hit “Hang on Sloopy” was knocked off the number one spot by The Beatles as well as host of seasoned vets Gary Wright, Mr. Mister's Richard Page, Edgar Winter, and The Romantics' Wally Palmer, along with drummer Gregg Bissonette.
This is about as far from a boy band as it is possible to get, but what you get is a show that is real fun with the entire band showcasing their talents, which is a show in it’s self, add to this a Beatle, the genuine article, a man who was there and you have all the ingredients for an show that delivers in entertainment. That is what this show is all about, entertainment, with so many musicians on stage they could all try to out do each other, that does not happen, what you get is friends jamming.
It is Ringo that everyone has come to see and he does not disappoint, delivering all the songs that you expect of him and it is time for audience participation when he starts “Yellow Submarine” this is what we wanted. “Here is a song that I used to sing with that other band I was with, I sang it with Rory Storm and The Hurricanes and I am still singing it” he jokes before singing “Boys”.
He added a couple of his songs from “Y not” his last Album, “The other side of Liverpool” and “Peace Dream” for his Liverpool audience.
Ringo said “I love Liverpool” and you had to wonder how it had all gone so wrong for him, but you would have be pretty mean spirited did not believe him, this Liverpool audience did not care the shout went up “We love you Ringo” and we did, Ringo and his All Starr Band did Liverpool proud, all is forgiven.
If you missed Ringo and his All Starr Band you can catch the show at the Manchester Opera House on Wednesday 22nd June, it is worth it.
