The last album that The Pigeon Detectives released was back in 2008; so it is easy to understand why they may have been apprehensive about coming back with a new album and hence touring that album.
Back in 2008 after releasing their second album, Emergency, The Pigeon Detectives were riding high off the success of their first two albums.
They vast became an indie favourite after being championed by Jo Whiley, supporting the Kaiser Chiefs on tour, and being nominated for Best New Act at the 2007 Q awards – unfortunately losing out to The Enemy.
Fast forward three years and we have The Pigeon Detectives fresh off from releasing their album Up Guards And At ‘Em, and tonight we see them bring the tour for this album to Liverpool’s O2 Academy 2.
If there ever were any pangs of apprehension among the band it certainly did not show, as from the moment the band hit the stage they exuded a deserved confidence.
The band had a renewed vigour and energy; in the three years since the release of their much hyped second album Emergency they had obviously not lost any of the passion for live performance. Although, having not seen The Pigeon Detectives live before it was unclear what to expect from the band.
However, whatever it was that I may have been expecting from The Pigeon Detectives it certainly was not what The Pigeon Detectives delivered.
What I expected was a run of the mill indie band with a few fairly decent sing-a-long songs. What I got was a high energy all out assault from the moment the band took to the stage till the moment they left it.
The band looked as though they were enjoying every minute of the gig and seemed genuinely pleased to be there - with singer Matt Bowman announcing that The Pigeon Detectives don’t normally do an encore but tonight they would.
Whilst telling the crowd between songs that Liverpool crowds were great and that they weren’t just saying that they meant it - bless.
It is safe to say The Pigeon detectives won me over, I don’t think I’ve ever gone to a gig expecting so little and yet come away having enjoyed it so much. And credit to them for being able to do that as it is testament to their dedication of their craft.
Bill hicks once said that musicians should “play their f*****g hearts out”. I’ve quoted him before and I will keep on quoting him because he is right.
It doesn’t matter what genre or what band you are listening to if you go to a gig and that band gives it their all that is all you can ask. And that is what The Pigeon Detectives did tonight – they played their hearts out.
The majority of the songs as expected were from the new album, with The Pigeon Detectives proving they could tug on our hearts strings as well as make us dance.
They gave us the more subdued songs such as What Can I Say?, Turn Out The Lights, and I Don’t Know You. They then flicked the switch and gave us the foot stomping album highlights that are Go At It Completely, Done In Secret, Lost, and She Wants Me. Yet not to disappoint, the band also performed My Emergency and Everybody Wants Me much to the crowds delight.
Throw in some crowd surfing, swinging from the rafters and climbing on speakers - plus a good deed from Matt Bowman who handed out bottles of water to the crowd to keep them hydrated – and it made for a genuinely impressive gig.
