Tickling funny bones at the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall this weekend was loveable geordie stand-up Sarah Millican.
With a show entitled 'Chatterbox', Sarah has proven her old school teachers wrong by making a career out of her chatty nature, and indeed revealled her nature to be far ruder than the somewhat cuddlier persona seen on the television. Choosing 'cuddlier' as an adjective is not intended to take a pop at what Sarah calls her 'cafe shelf' (i.e 'muffin top') but it's hard to describe Millican in any other way. She is the cheeky, hilarious friend you just want to hug for making you feel better about life over a cup of tea and a biscuit.
And don't get Sarah started on biscuits. Suggesting "You get three biscuits and a nice half-hour sit down" a far better marketing slogan than 'Save A Life' in encouraging the great British public to Give Blood, the audience couldn't help but agree as mouths began salivating at the mere mention of a chocolate HobNob.
Swearing like a Newcastle docker, Sarah admitted she is far from feminine at times, inviting the crowd to shout out the best differences between men and women with surprising revelations coming from a willing Liverpool audience. From "Having a good scratch!" to "Free drinks at the bar!" it was clear all traces of sophistication usually present in the Philharmonic Hall had disappeared and Sarah's fans were in for an 'anything goes' discussion. Banjo strings, hymens and biscuit tin lids were next on the agenda under the topic 'name something you've broken during sex.'
Drawing laughs thick and fast, Sarah's charming geordie tones make the most crude subjects seem a flowery conversation you could have with your granny, blending neatly with gentle stories about drinking tea in the bath and the unbounding joy in taking off your bra at the end of a long day.
Achieving a fine balance between being open and honest about subjects such as divorce, masturbation and oral sex without being labelled crass, bitter, man-hating or even a 'slag' is a challenge female comics have long struggled with.
Sarah's humour is genuine, her frank attitude refreshing and, although there's not a sniff of character comedy in her routine, she is first female stand up on a par with the legend that is Victoria Wood.
