Shiverpool Ghost Tours have long been established as a fantastic way to explore well known city locations and their lesser known ghoulish histories.
Each tour is conducted by a set of actors, or “The Shiverghouls” as they are affectionately known. Theatrical performances are delivered with gusto by young aspiring thespians with passion for the history they are portraying.
We embarked on the “Horror at St George’s Hall” tour, the latest in addition to the famous “Hope Street” tour, and the recently revamped “Auld City Shivers” tour.
The spooky vibe is set by larger-than-life characters from the past, dressed in dreary rags befitting their downtrodden owners.
Greeted by a grumpy night warden, who will guide (or rather, bark orders at) we poor wretches through the dark cells of St George’s Hall where many have met a death sentence for crimes too wicked to speak of.
Handing each tour member a torch for personal use, we are instructed to beware of our own health and safety as we stroll through St George’s creepy underpasses, where lonely souls are known to wander the dark corridors.
Ushered into several awe-inspiring locations inside the building, the most thrilling being the public benches situated in the grand old Court Room. No longer in use, this wonderful scene is utilised as we witness a Judge condemning a young mother to death. She has been found guilty of poisoning her own daughter, along with her husband - and mother. She pleads for mercy but receives none. We spectators are left to gawp as she is dragged to the eerie cells below – our next destination.
Drama unfolds as we encounter the characters up close – at times, frighteningly so - as the actors appear from the depths of darkness to put the shivers up each member of your group in turn. The Shiverpool tour motto is a promise to “Scare because we care” and they certainly do exactly that. You have been warned.
Tours operate all year round and those brave enough to experience them are guaranteed a scare.
For Halloween, Shiverpool will run tours up to and including a midnight spook! Don't miss out.
Tours are £13.00 per adult, £8 per child and concessions are available along with large group bookings – just ask.
