Tourists arriving by coach at Liverpool Cathedral are to receive a special welcome this summer.

The City Council’s Tourism Team has launched the its first Coach Welcome Scheme to improve the experience at one of the most popular attractions in the North West of England.

During the pilot scheme passengers will experience a personalised Liverpool welcome from the Cathedral and will be given information about what there is to see and do in the city at that particular time.

Coach drivers can also get advice about coach parking in the city centre and enjoy free hospitality in one of the Cathedral’s dining areas.

The City Council organised a full familiarisation trip for the coach tours industry to show just how much is on offer for visitors to Liverpool.

Coach companies can book ahead online to receive the tailor-made service at www.liverpooltraveltrade.com/site/coach-and-groups

The initiative was introduced to coach operators by The Mersey Partnership at The Best of Britain and Ireland trade fair in mid-March and the Cathedral is set to welcome nearly 10,000 passengers over the summer period.

Liverpool City Council’s Tourism Team is looking to roll-out the unique welcome programme across other major attractions, and is part of a wider strategy to build on the city’s surge in popularity since being European Capital of Culture in 2008.

In 2009 Liverpool was voted Britain’s favourite city to visit, after the two capital cities of Edinburgh and London, and is now one of the top 6 most visited cities in the UK.

Cllr Anna Rothery, Chair of Liverpool City Council’s Culture and Tourism Select Committee, said: "Liverpool is a hugely popular destination for our culture, heritage, shopping and sport but we’re always looking to improve the experience for visitors – and first impressions have a huge impact.

"The city is world famous for being friendly and this coach scheme builds on a lot of work we did for ‘08 to ensure people receive a welcome befitting the city’s world class offer.

"The feedback we’ve had so far has been very positive and there’s many more attractions we can work with to raise the bar that bit further."

Eryl Parry, Director of Enterprise at Liverpool Cathedral said: “The Cathedral has enjoyed working with colleagues to develop a scheme that truly makes a difference to the experience of people visiting our city – coach passengers and their drivers.

"And it really is unique – that personal welcome done with real pride as ambassadors of our city along with information that helps the driver, but also helps passengers to get the most out of their time with us, all happening at one of the world’s greatest buildings.”

Jenny Moran, Visitor Services Manager, added: “The excellent feedback from those early users of the scheme has been such that we are already thinking of ways to develop it further with the same enthusiasm and creative, collaborative thinking that started this off.

"Just responding to the number of different queries we are now handling every day has helped us to learn more and more about the great offer we all have here and I am making new relationships with tourism venues all around the city as the scheme begins to take off!"
