"We’re the litmus test of whether a society respects human rights.
We’re the canaries in the mine."
Liverpool Everyman and Playhouse, English Touring Theatre and Hampstead Theatre present the world première of Canary at the Liverpool Playhouse.
Canary, a deeply moving, funny, unflinching, and often magical story about love, honesty and being brave enough to sing out at the top of your voice.
Canary promises to be an epic journey exploring politics, policing and attitudes towards sexuality over the last five decades, written by Jonathan Harvey (Beautiful Thing, Gimme Gimme Gimme, Beautiful People, Coronation Street) and directed by BAFTA Award-winner Hettie Macdonald.
Laced with magical touches and pitch black humour, Canary is an unflinching story about family, honesty, and forbidden love spanning four decades. This co-production between Liverpool Everyman and Playhouse, English Touring Theatre and Hampstead Theatre, premiéres at the Liverpool Playhouse from Saturday 24th April to Saturday 15 May then opens in Hampstead prior to a UK tour.
In 1960s Liverpool two lovers hide in the closet, then go their separate ways. While pits close and dole queues grow, a couple of runaways find ‘Heaven’ in 1980s London. Flash forward to today and the paparazzi are chasing a love story that could tear a family apart.
Spanning three generations Canary is a tragic, comic and surreal exploration of the changing attitudes towards homosexuality set against the changing backdrop of modern Britain from 1960s to the present.
Harvey explores politics, policing and attitudes towards sexuality throughout all echelons of society during this period of great transformation, while also stopping to examine the consequences these choices have on the individuals on this epic journey.
The ensemble cast features Paula Wilcox (Man About the House, Shirley Valentine, La Cage aux Folles) as Ellie, the family matriarch. Stage and screen actor Sean Gallagher (The Black Album, Coronation Street, Doctor Who) takes the role of Billy while Merseyside-born actor Philip McGinley (Coronation Street, Great Expectations, Heartbeat) will play Tom.
The cast also includes Kevin Trainor (Lost Monsters, Hellboy, John Adams), Philip Voss (3 Sisters On Hope Street, The Circle, The Giant) Jodie McNee (When We Are Married, A Taste of Honey), Ben Allen and Ryan Sampson.
