National Museums Liverpool is pleased to announce a new object loan to the Museum of Liverpool, which opens next year on the city’s historic Pier Head.

Currently under construction at the Pier Head, the Museum of Liverpool is the new national museum for the people of Liverpool.

The museum will provide 8,000 square metres of public space across three floors, and visitors will have access to over 6,000 objects that are currently in store, many of which have never been on public display before.

The galleries in the museum will focus on four main themes: Port City, Creative City, People’s City and Global City.

Prior to the opening of the Museum of Liverpool and amidst the excitement of the run up to this year’s Grand National, museum curators are extremely pleased to be able to display the jockey’s colours of Aintree legend Red Rum.

They will be on display at the World Museum from Monday 29 March, prior to display in the new Museum of Liverpool when it opens in 2011.

Red Rum is the only horse to win the historic race three-times, the jumper to be displayed was worn for all three of Red Rum’s victories; by jockey Brian Fletcher in 1973 and’74, and Tommy Stack in 1977.

This historic piece is a maroon woollen jumper, it features a yellow horizontal diamond, which originated from the logo of ‘Rummy’s’ owner Noel le Mare’s company, North West Construction.

The jumper was worn for all the races from 1973, including the years ’75 and ’76 when Red Rum came second in the National.

Buried at the finishing post on Aintree Racecourse, Red Rum was famously trained by Ginger McCain on the sands of Southport, being treated to a therapeutic swim in the sea before every Grand National.

Ginger and his wife Beryl have kindly loaned the jockey’s colours to National Museums Liverpool.

Katie Brown, assistant exhibition curator at the new Museum of Liverpool said:

“The colours are going on display at an ideal time. Visitors going to the Western Discovery Centre at World Museum can look forward to getting as close as possible to the legendary Red Rum, and maybe glean a bit of luck ahead of this year’s Grand National.”

When the new Museum of Liverpool opens in 2011, the colours – including the jockey’s cap – will be on display in the Creative City gallery.

Celebrating the creative personality of Liverpool, it will be one of the first galleries to open in the museum, uncovering why the city has produced such an amazing roll call of writers, poets, performers, musicians, visual artists, comedians and sports people.

Among the many displays, visitors will be able to step back in time and immerse themselves in The Beatles phenomenon and the passion of Merseyside’s famous football clubs.
