The Specials and 2 Tone records legend, Jerry Dammers, is back complete with an 18 piece star line-up band including Zoe Rahman (piano) Finn Peters (flute) Anthony Joseph / Francine Luce (vocal) Jason Yarde / Denys Baptiste (saxophone)!
Jerry Dammers, who wrote Ghost Town and Free Nelson Mandela, started his orchestra as a “tribute band” to space jazz maverick Sun Ra, adding his own funky arrangements.
Some of the country’s best jazz musicians perform inside Dammers’ rhythmic setting, which draws on funk, reggae, rock and recent styles such as hip hop, jungle or dubstep.
Dammers describes the orchestra not as “old school” or “new school” but as “back to school. Evoking nostalgia, not for the past, but for a future.
He said: “At least we can try and remind people that there was once a time when musicians and artists were trying to invent a better world.”
By keeping his ear to the (under)ground all these years, Dammers has been able to assemble some of the best jazz and other musicians, and vocalists in the country.
He says: “It still feels completely unreal that such brilliant musicians are willing to play in this orchestra with me, I can’t thank them enough.
