Liverpool Cathedral is to offer visitors spectacular views of the city.

The cathedral will open its tower to the public every Thursday evening from 18 March to October, after a successful trial during the Autumn.

An opening night event allows guests to climb close to the cathedral's bells and then head back to the ground for refreshments.

Dean Justin Welby said: "People who may not normally have had a chance to engage with the Cathedral during the day commented that [the pilot was] a fantastic way to experience what the Cathedral has to offer, and in a most spectacular way."

The cathedral was able to open up its tower during the night after it installed lighting there, and in the bell chamber.

It received funding from the Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA) and English Heritage.

Director of Tourism at the NWDA, Nick Brooks-Sykes, said it is important historical sites are visited by the public.

He added: "We can attract a wider audience to our heritage attractions and ensure that they are playing their part in boosting the region’s visitor economy."
