St David's Day service is to be marked with a special service at Liverpool Town Hall as the city celebrates its longstanding Welsh links.
The city’s annual Welsh Civic Service on Monday 1 March will herald Liverpool’s cherished close connection with ‘The Land of our Fathers’.
Liverpool’s Lord Mayor Councillor Mike Storey said: “Liverpool is incredibly proud of its Welsh connection. Liverpool and Wales are intrinsically linked and thankfully because of our close proximity to North Wales we have some of the most beautiful scenery in the world available on our doorstep.”
The Rev Professor Stan Rees will be the presiding minister at the event. He said: “The Welsh community in Liverpool have always held an event on St David’s Day but it is the first time we are having an event at the Town Hall which is very special.
“Around 200 years ago we used to march through the city and in the 1940’s and 50’s we held a singing festival in St George’s Hall. This event is part of a longstanding tradition and we cherish the close connection with Liverpool. The Welsh influence in the city is very evident in the spheres of building, medicine and education – in fact numerous aspects of Liverpool life are directly linked to Wales.”
