'Battle of the Barbers' in Beatles' famous Penny Lane, Liverpool

A 'battle of the barbers' has broken out in Liverpool's famous Penny Lane, between two hairdressers claiming be 'The Beatles Barber'.

Ever since Paul McCartney immortalised the famous street in his 1967 hit, tourists have flocked to the site expecting to find "a barber showing photographs".

In fact there never was a barber on the street, until now, after crimper Barry Hayden moved into a small shop at 121 Penny Lane in January.

But while tourists are delighted to stop by Barry's shop and "Say Hello", nearby hairdresser Adele Allan is furious that Barry has cashed in on the Penny Lane address.

Adele, whose "Tony Slavin's Barber Shop" is on nearby Smithdown Place, has accused Barry of stealing her thunder, and has even threatened him with legal action.

She said: "I am upset because that shop is not the real one. Tourists travel hundreds of miles to come to the shop in the song and go there - and yet the real shop is just across the road.

"Loads of celebrities pop in too because they want to see the barber's shop in the song."

But Barry, 52, is shocked at the fuss he's caused by just cutting hair - which he's been doing since 1973.

He said: "I have never told anybody that I'm the barber from the song. I've made a point not to do that because I don't want to be misleading.

"Until this week I even had a 'now open' sign outside, which made it pretty obvious that I was new here.

"The Beatles bring hordes of tourists to this part of Liverpool, and I was amazed nobody had opened a barber shop on Penny Lane up until now."

Barry hit the headlines this week after he started posting photographs of his customers on his online Twitter page, bringing the lyrics of the famous song to life.

But according to Beatles expert and tour guide Phil Coppell, neither of the shops was the original barber.

Magical Mystery Tour guide Phil said: "At the time the song was written the barber's shop opposite the Penny Lane tram shelter was called Bioletti's.

"But Bioletti's barbers closed-down in the late sixties and the building was taken-over by a photographic studio and now it is a Barnardo's charity shop.

"When our Beatles tours pass through the area, we are quick to point out that the original barber shop no longer exists.

"There is no harm in tourists stopping by either of the barbers in the area for a quick photograph or a haircut. It's as close as they can get to the real thing."
