A sneak preview shot of an iconic new sculpture for Liverpool has been unveiled as part of a special exhibition this week.
The Liverpool Map is made up of six 2m tall panels of fused glass capturing a snapshot of the city in its 800th birthday and will stand in front of one of the 80ft picture windows in the People's Gallery in the new Museum of Liverpool when it opens in 2011.
The newly-released image features as part of a special exhibition, charting the sculpture's creation, which opens today at the Daily Post offices, on
Old Hall Street running from 15th - 26th February 2010.
The exhibition demonstrates the public involvement in the creation the iconic art work to be enjoyed by future generations. Visitors can also see a slideshow which features photographs used in the piece's manufacture and samples of coloured glass showing how it will be fused together.
The Map will highlight the city's local, national and global influences and is composed of 16 layers of glass, divided into four sections: History,
Shifting Boundaries, People's City and Culture.
The project has been headed by Phil Redmond, who came up with the original idea, in partnership with Open Culture, Liverpool Daily Post and National Museums Liverpool.
