A record number of community groups are to benefit from a new way of funding grass roots culture in Liverpool.
Liverpool City Council’s Executive Board have approved plans to fund arts and cultural projects by 46 groups and organisations – double the number in 2009 - as part of a unique partnership with Liverpool Primary Care Trust to celebrate the city’s themed year of Health and Wellbeing for 2010.
All of the events benefitting from the £200,000 programme, which is being jointly funded by both organisations, are scheduled to run from April to December.
Highlights in the programme, which features many activities engaging the elderly, minority communities and refugees in the arts, include:
* A production of Romeo & Juliet at Croxteth Fire Station.
* Recording history of LGBT people who have used mental health services in Liverpool over past 60 years.
* A 40-minute musical on the theme of 'Keep Your Heart Healthy'
* High quality theatre for Liverpool’s homeless community, providing drama workshops for 60 people.
* A cross arts project with Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine to create health related wall friezes with innovative 'Talking Pens'.
* A series of Chinese arts and culture workshops across the city, including storytelling, dance, calligraphy, origami focusing on the 2010 Shanghai Expo.
* Art workshops across the city for young disabled people concluding in an exhibition of their paintings, mosaics, animations and sculptures.
Cllr Gary Millar, Liverpool City Council cabinet lead for Enterprise and Culture, said: "Liverpool is wash with creativity and its fantastic to see so many organisations and artists in our communities responding so imaginatively to Liverpool’s Year of Health and Wellbeing.
"As always we were oversubscribed for this funding programme but with the PCT’s excellent support, we’ve been able to support a record number of groups and activities this year.
"I know this programme will provide thousands of people with many wonderful ways to celebrate our Year of Health & Well Being on their very own doorstep. And to have culture that is largely in the hands of the people for the people – well, there’s no better way to building a healthier city than that."
Gideon Ben Tovim, Chair of Liverpool PCT, said: "2010 Year of Health and Wellbeing is an opportunity to raise awareness about how people across our city can improve their own health and wellbeing, and will provide a comprehensive programme of events for people to get involved in and try-out.
"The grants available will provide community organisations with an opportunity to make their own contribution to improving the city’s health through the arts and I’m sure they will make a real difference to those involved and everyone around them."
