Liverpool Cathedral is to host a major exhibition of art from February 1st.

Icons in Transformation is a huge 180 piece installation with artworks being shown throughout the Cathedral. It is the only time this significant exhibition, which has been designed with Cathedrals in mind, is coming to the North West.

Icons in Transformation will be officially opened by Bishop James with Professor Phil Redmond on Jan 31st at 6.30pm.

The work by artist Ludmila Pawlowska will include 12 large sculptural pieces many of which will be suspended in the Cathedral providing a stunning and dramatic visual impression.

Russian born Ludmila who now works in Sweden has been deeply influenced by the colour and symbolism of the art in her home country. It is not an exhibition solely about icons but shows the icon as an inspiration for Ludmila’s artistic vision.

It shows both traditional Russian icons and contemporary art inspired by traditional icon-painting techniques. Ludmila uses similar techniques, with many layers of paint on wooden panels.

The exhibition is very unusual since the icon tradition is very strict and prohibits any transformation.

Ludmila said: “What fascinates me most in the art of icons is the deep sensitivity they radiate. When I am looking at an icon I am irresistibly attracted.

"Looking into the eyes of Maria's icon feels like an encounter with the unknown and boundless deep. The icon has a spiritual power which comes from the icon itself, a kind of light.

"To create and capture a light has always been the most difficult and greatest challenge to artists through the centuries. This exhibition is my attempt to capture it in my own way.”

Canon Anthony Hawley, who is responsible for bringing this exhibition to the Cathedral, said: “Icons in Transformation is an awe inspiring work and Liverpool Cathedral will be one of the most impressive settings for it yet.

"We are delighted to be able to show so much of Ludmila’s challenging and inspiring work and look forward to seeing her work in place.”
