As the world rang in the New Year, a partial lunar eclipse was visible above Liverpool's Liver Buildings last night, as these stunning pictures show.

It was the last and largest of four minor lunar eclipses in 2009.

Only a small portion of the Moon entered the Earth's umbral shadow, but there was be a distinct darkening visible over the Moon's southern surface at greatest eclipse.

The next total lunar eclipse occurs on December 21, 2010.
