Liverpool Cathedral has announced the details of its Christmas and New Year British Sign Language Interpreted Services.
The BSL Interpreted services will take place on:
December 20th, 3 pm – Holly Bough service – interpreter Andy Higgins
December 25th, 10.30 am – Christmas Day Eucharist – interpreter Ros Hunt
January 3rd, 10.30 am – Eucharist – interpreter Andy Higgins.
This is the first time that the Cathedral has had BSL interpretation for the Christmas Day service. The Cathedral is already the first cathedral in the UK to have launched, for deaf and hard of hearing people, a filmed, captioned, British Sign Language tour of the Cathedral.
It is available on portable DVD as an alternative to the audio tour used by hearing people and permits a wider range of visitors to enjoy the splendour and history of this Great Space.
Justin Welby, Dean of Liverpool Cathedral said, "One of the best recent developments at the Cathedral is the introduction of British Sign Language (BSL) interpreting once a month and for large services. There are several things we still need to get right but it is a visible sign of our desire to be inclusive and accessible in new ways.
"The act of signing the service is also one of great beauty in itself. Next year we are intending to have a signed Eucharist with interpretation into voice, and that should also be a milestone."
Rev Dr Hannah Lewis, Team Leader for work among among Deaf People in the Diocese of Liverpool said: “I have been impressed by the commitment of the Cathedral to improving access for all deaf people to all aspects of its life and mission.
The new interpreted services, in addition to the BSL DVD tour really put the Cathedral at the forefront of provision for Deaf people in the diocese and nationally. It’s a really exciting development and one I am proud to be involved in.”
Hannah also runs Liverpool Deaf Church, which holds services at various venues across Liverpool. For more information on Deaf Church, please contact Hannah.lewis@liverpool.anglican.org
