Liverpool's Williamson Square is to become a winter wonderland complete with ice rink.
From Tuesday 17th November at 5pm, the square will be decorated with snow machines, Yule logs, and winter warmers samples from Signature Café (based in the new Rapid) and visitors greeted by Jack Frosts and Eskimos.
The ice rink will open to the public on Thursday 19th, with Council Leader Warren Bradley, Pete Price, and partners form City Central Business Improvement District (BID) testing out the ice rink on Tuesday 17th November.
BID members and partners will be gathering at 5pm to witness a show by International Professional Skaters, Liverpool's very own ‘Donna McCarthy’ and ‘David McGrouther’ and will go on to test out the ice themselves.
Councillor Warren Bradley Leader of Liverpool City Council said “There has been a huge amount of preparations that have gone in to this years Christmas events everything from street animation, Go Penguins, Christmas markets and festive lighting.
"It is fantastic that the BID team have managed to secure a genuine real ice rink to add to all of the festivities.”
"The Christmas package for Liverpool this year will be the very best that the city has ever seen children, visitors and shoppers will be enjoy all that is on offer here in Liverpool and even get healthy and active at the same time”.
City Central BID is a private sector led partnership and manages the traditional retail heart of Liverpool on behalf of 650 businesses. Local businesses have identified the additional services that add value to their trading environment.
The BID team delivers those services and ensures a cleaner, safer and more animated city centre and supports all events and marketing aspects to drive footfall and increase sales in the city centre.
Ged Gibbons, BID Chief Executive said “After receiving such a positive response from The Urban Beach we had in Williamson Square during the summer, an ice rink was the next best thing we could do for winter.
"It will be there for over six weeks from 19th November to 10th January for everyone to enjoy whilst keeping fit.”
The Ice Rink will accommodate 100 people per hour. Cost £5.00 to skate. Children under 16 years are not allowed on the ice without an adult. Children of school age will not be allowed on the ice during school hours unless this is part of an organised school visit.
