New evidence has surfaced to clarify John Lennon’s claim that the Beatles were 'bigger than Jesus,' were taken out of context.
In 1966 his comments sparked outrage in the American Bible Belt, with massive groups gathering to burn Beatles records on bonfires.
But a BBC Radio 4 programme yesterday carried a previously unheard interview which Lennon gave in Canada three years after his comment.
Lennon insisted the comments were misinterpreted.
He said: “It’s just an expression meaning the Beatles seem to me to have more influence over youth than Christ.
“Now I wasn’t saying that was a good idea, ‘cos I’m one of Christ’s biggest fans.
“And if I can turn the focus on the Beatles on to Christ's message then that’s what we're here to do.”
Lennon wanted to make The Beatles Christian
