St Helens is set to turn its clocks back to a bygone era after the town was awarded a £19,000 grant by the Heritage Lottery Fund.
Victoria Square is set to be transformed as part of a free event which will allow visitors to the centre to experience a traditional Victorian Christmas.
The Town Hall will host various events including Dickens drama performances, craft workshops, carol singing and a mini exhibition on 12 and 13 December 2009.
St Helens Council are also providing transport for local care home residents to join in the festivities and share their own Christmas experiences with a local historian who is compiling a CD for the event.
Councillor Wally Ashcroft, Executive Member for Culture, Sport and Heritage, said: "There is huge interest in this project and we are anticipating that it will engage more than 1,100 people from across the Borough.
"It will also help to preserve and protect our rich heritage and give people a unique experience to better understand culture and heritage."
Sara Hilton, Head of Heritage Lottery Fund North West, added: “This project will provide a wonderful opportunity for people from across the community to explore and celebrate the heritage of St Helens.
"Over 400 primary age children will be able to learn about our Victorian history, by getting involved in workshops as part of the exhibition, whilst older generations will be able to share and preserve their memories of Christmases past.
"Through building an understanding of our shared heritage we are able to create a solid foundation for the modern St.Helens community.”
