Hit Liverpool musical 'Twopence to Cross the Mersey' will celebrate breaking the £2 million mark when it returns to the Liverpool Empire next month.
The box office smash first hit the stage in 2004 and has enjoyed a series of successful runs ever since.
Over 80,000 people have seen the play in the 38 days during which it was on show and it has been recognised as one of the best selling novels in the UK.
In 2005 it enjoyed a spell atop the Live Nation best seller chart, ahead of literary classics War of the Worlds and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.
It returns for its fourth spell at the Empire on October 6 and producers Rob and Alan Fennah have been taken aback by its success.
Rob said: “Considering the show will only have been staged for 7 weeks in total, hitting two million at the box office in such a short space of time is a real achievement.”
Alan added: “Helen Forrester has sold over 4 million books in the UK and Ireland alone and our aim now is to tour the show and give Helen’s vast readership a chance to see her most famous book come to life.”
Based on Helen Forrester's bestselling story of how her father was declared bankrupt in 1930 and forced to move the entire family from middle class suburbia in the south of England to depression-ridden Merseyside.
A strong Liverpool cast features with comedienne Pauline Daniels and Holby City actor Mark Moraghan both featuring in key roles within the play.
Hannah Ashdown, General Manager of the Empire Theatre, said: "Twopence to Cross the Mersey is one of the most successful shows to appear at this theatre in recent years.
"People are even travelling from as far as Japan and Australia to come and see it, we are delighted to have supported this great production from the start."
Twopence to Cross the Mersey opens at the Liverpool Empire from 6th – 17th October 2009.
Tickets are available the box office on 0844 847 2525, in person at the Empire box office or at www.liverpoolempire.org.uk.
