The Lord Mayor has vowed that Liverpool will beat its opponents Las Vegas in this year's Santa Dash.
Councillor Mike Storey has written to the Mayor of Las Vegas to lay down a challenge to take overall control of the Santa Dash scene.
Liverpool is bidding to become the Santa Dash city with the highest number of people taking part.
Last year, more than seven thousand runners took to the streets of Liverpool dressed as Father Christmas for the city's annual charity Santa Dash.
They aimed to regain the world record for the biggest number of Santas in a 5km run and they beat the target, set by New York in 2007, of 6,800.
And with more than 7000 taking part they succeeded, but were beaten to the crown by Los Angeles, where 7,400 had completed a Santa run just 18 hours earlier.
Councillor storey said: "Las Vegas may well be the gambling capital of America but the smart money is on Liverpool.
"They may well be famous for their casinos and boxing events but it will be Liverpool who delivers the knockout punch.
"This year we aim to have the highest number of Santa’s running anywhere in the world and I would urge as many people as possible to dig out their trainers and join in.
"I’m taking part and have challenged the Mayor of Las Vegas to take part in their Santa Dash."
This year’s 5K Santa Dash takes place on Sunday 6 December starting 9.30am starting at Canada Boulevard near the Liver Buildings and finishing at the Town Hall.
The entry fee costs £20 and includes a Santa Suit, commemorative medal, T-shirt and goody bag.
