When Dave Lister finally gets Back To Earth after his three million year stretch on Red Dwarf, where would he ask Holly to plot a course for? His local of course... The Aigburth Arms.

So they must have taken a bizzare wrong turn in a parallel universe to end up on the cobbled streets of Weatherfield and queuing for the bar of The Rover's Return next to Simon McDonald.

But here are some exclusive snaps of the boys from the Dwarf being directed by the cult sci-fi show's creator Doug Naylor.

The cast, who have been re-united by digital comedy channel Dave, will argue that sending the Red Dwarf crew to Manchester is not so strange.

For the first three series - back in '87, '88 and '89 - that was just how the show was made. The gang would rehearse in London then board a bus up north for the Beeb's Manchester studios.

A show insider said: "These shots were taken during a complex shoot, with vehicular difficulties, bitter cold and the sneak arrival of a spoiler-driven paparazzi photographer.

"But the cast and crew remained in good spirits, though it will come as no surprise that people were thankful to get indoors for the end of the day to shoot scenes on some of the soap's interior sets."
