Leverhulme Trust supporting development of Liverpool dance artists

Merseyside Dance Initiative are pleased to announce further support from The Leverhulme Trust to initiate a new programme of Dance Intensives.

Dance Intensives 2 will focus more specifically on choreographic skills, inviting artists to lead workshops in performance and choreography alongside technical expertise that would be expected in a traditional dance class.

Continuing to identify artists from UK and abroad is key but also encouraging artists from the region to take the lead in training artists based her is also very important.

Karen Gallagher, Director of MDI says: "Dance takes practice, the artists' tool is the body and as such must be working to its maximum capacity.

"In order to do this the body needs to be regularly stimulated, physically and technically in order that it can continue to improve, enabling the artists to increase stamina and develop creatively."

The programme aims:

· To provide space & time for local, regional and national artists, and local 3rd year dance students to attend to develop there own dance development

· Inspire artists through sampling work from national & international arena

· Offer opportunities to network with artists from within & from outside the region

· Provide employment opportunities for local dance artists

A number of artists involved in the training previously have set up companies and developed work for touring such as: Jennifer Rees, Jennifer Smith, and Ithalia Forrel.

We hope to build on this success and ensure that this provision of additional support and development is available for emerging and established artists in this region.

The programme begins with a 5 day choreographic intensive led by Bawren Tavaziva on 16th February. Bawren was born in Zimbabwe and in his early teens became a dance apprentice with the Tumbuka Dance Company.

Moved to UK in 1998 where he has performed with various dance companies, Carole Brown, Phoenix and Union Dance. In his work he explores how the traditional work hand in hand with western contemporary culture.
