The well-established Leap Dance Festival is taking new steps forward with an increased number of venues for 2009.
Organised by the Merseyside Dance Initiative there will be a two-week programme of dance in March 2009 across the region.
Those taking part include a range of local, national and international dance artists and companies which like New Art Club, Protein, Bare Bones and Henri Oguike.
LEAP 09 Contemporary Dance Festival marks the event's seventeenth year and for 2009 companies and performers will explore and experiment with the theme of 'Words in Motion'.
LEAP 09 is introducing new venues such as the impressive New Brighton Floral Pavilion and the Contemporary Urban Centre, as well as the regular and more established Unity Theatre and Southport Arts Centre.
MDI's aim is to create a positive and lasting impression by promoting and nurturing dance in the region and have programmed a diverse range of some of the best companies on the touring dance circuit, as well as supporting emerging talent, programming performances for local and regional dancers to showcase their talents within the festival, such as the Community Dance Showcase, North West Moves and New Moves Liverpool.
There is also a free event for all the Family at the Floral Pavilion which includes a performance of Niki McCretton's Hoof!
LEAP 09 will also aid to build on the legacy of the successful European Capital of Culture year in 2008. MDI contributed to the culture year’s success in 2008 with British Dance Edition, LEAP 08 and Capital Nights Dance Festival all taking place.
MDI Director Karen Gallagher said: "I am really excited with our 2009 diverse programme of dance, there is without doubt something to suit everybody’s tastes.
"After 17 years, LEAP Dance Festival is firmly established as one of the leading UK dance festivals and an important part of Liverpool's portfolio of annual festivals."
From 1–15 March 2009 the regions dance lovers can watch and partake in a diverse range of contemporary dance. Highlights of LEAP 09 include Henri Oguike Dance Company, Bare Bones, New Art Club, Protein and Stephanie Schober Dance Company,
