A Liverpool community is to stage a special event to commemorate the Holocaust and raise awareness of genocides and other tragedies.

Staged by the cummunity in Kensington, the free event will feature films, performances, discussions, presentations and stalls at the Academy of St Francis of Assisi, Gardener’s Drive, Newsham Park on Saturday 24th January 2009.

Local councillor Louise Baldock said: "This event aims to stimulate discussion about the horrors of the Holocaust and more recent genocides, and by particularly involving young people, we can try to change attitudes and make sure such an event can never happen again.

"We want to raise awareness of the Holocaust and show what good work is going on here in Liverpool to combat ignorance, prejudice and intolerance."

The event begins at 12.30pm with stalls and displays of photos of Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp by the Kensington-based organisation Yellow house.

At 1pm the film 'A Painful Reminder' by Sidney Bernstein documents Nazi atrocities at concentration camps.

An adults only discussion on "Rape in contemporary genocide and ethnic cleansing – with Liverpool refugee perspectives," takes place at 2.30pm.

Refreshments will be served at 5pm before performances from Edge Hill Youth Club and the Kensington detached youth Project start at 6pm. Other young people are warmly welcome to attend.

Food will be served at 7.30pm before the main commemoration event which features performances from local Jewish, Congalese, Darfurian, Kosovar, Kurdish, Polish, Roma and Rwandan communities.

The event is free and everyone is welcome to attend.
