On the last Thursday of every month Tate Liverpool opens its doors until 21.00 for an evening of music, food, drink and the very best modern and contemporary art.
Late at Tate starts 2009 on a high note with an exciting range of free interactive activities and live performances in The Fifth Floor Live.
In one of the last opportunities to see the show before it closes on 1 February, visitors are invited to enjoy an evening of events relating to work by Fifth Floor artists Paul Rooney, Peter Liversidge and Nina Edge.
In response to Paul Rooney’s film The Futurist(2008), which features the city’s aspiring comics, Late at Tate presents a showcase of comedy in association with MuckComedy.com, a website set up to allow new performers to develop their talent. MUCK (Merseyside Uncut Comedy Kollective) stand-up’s will transform the International Festival party space on The Fifth Floor into a comedy venue from 19.30 -21.00.
Peter Liversidge’s work 120 Proposals for 'The Fifth Floor: Ideas Taking Space’ consists of 120 hand-typed proposals for ‘artworks’. Throughout The Fifth Floor, a selection of these proposals have been realised, documented, and then integrated into the exhibition. During tonight’s Late at Tate, live performances of two proposals will take place.
The first performance of the evening, Proposal no.87, is a lively sound clash, where the artist and a selection of DJ’s play 25 records from their collections in a strict thematic order to create a musical narrative. Previously performed in Canterbury, Blackpool, Caracas, Edinburgh, London and Basel, the second Liversidge performance of the evening, Proposal no.79, consists of a bespoke gin stand, where visitors will be treated to a world class gin and tonic.
The gin stand will be erected by the artist in the foyer and throughout the evening a free beverage will be distributed to each adult visitor.
Made with Hendrick’s Gin, voted the best gin in the world by the Wall Street Journal in 2003, each drink will be served in a special limited-edition glass etched with the date, edition number and the word ‘GIN’ which visitors can keep as a token. The performance lasts the duration of the gin: once the bottles and glasses are empty, the performance is over. Both events take place in the foyer.
Liverpool artist Nina Edge has devised a board game entitled 5 Dimensional Everything (2008), which is played on five layers and based on solitaire, combining elements of chance and preference. Visitors are invited to take part in a special evening tournament, where the winning word of the game will be announced by the Fifth Floor’s alternative Town Crier.
The initiative is supported by Esmée Fairbairn Foundation with additional support from Tate Liverpool Members and the National Lottery through Arts Council England. Learning programmes supported by PH Holt Charitable Trust and the Granada Foundation.
