Most of us, especially women, like to wear jewellery. The tradition of adorning our bodies with trinkets dates back centuries. Beads, flowers, wood, stones as well as precious metals and gemstones have been used as decoration throughout our history.
Jewellery can be a symbol of power and wealth. It can signify a union between people or an allegiance to a tribe, group or religion. It can simply be something the wearer finds attractive, as basic as a daisy chain or a flower in someone’s hair.
What we think of as jewellery today is generally made up, in some part, of metal and gemstones. Fashions within the jewellery world come and go, movements like Art Deco, La Belle Époque and even Surrealism have all affected jewellery design. Nowadays you’ll find a huge variety of materials, styles, shapes, genres and influences reflected in the jewellery available. There literally is something for everyone.
But, within all this variety and choice will always stand the classics. Pieces of jewellery that never go out of fashion because they are timeless. The obvious place to start is with wedding rings. The tradition of exchanging rings when getting married isn’t going anywhere any time soon. Yes, styles change and people want different things. From the very plainest gold band to the most elaborate engraved and gem set ring, the choice of wedding ring available is almost limitless.
Men will often prefer just plain white or yellow gold, or even platinum. Whilst a woman might want a diamond ring to complement her engagement ring, so they sit together as a set. Whatever you decide to go for, however demure or extravagant your tastes, the significance of the wedding band will always remain.
Another classic piece of jewellery for women is the eternity ring. Eternity rings are often given as a gift from a man to his loved one to commemorate an important event in the couple’s life together. This might be an anniversary or the birth of a child. Eternity rings are very romantic. The continuous band of gemstones represents the endless love between two people, with no beginning or end.
Diamonds are of course a very popular choice but again, fashions change. Lots of people now prefer different coloured stones like emeralds or sapphires. You can get eternity rings which use two or more different colours within the same ring, often diamonds interspersed with a coloured precious stone. Again, it will always depend on the personal taste of the person who is going to wear the ring. Some people prefer bold, bright colours or have a favourite gem stone, whilst others will always want the classic, everlasting glamour of diamonds.
