The European Capital of Culture for 2008, Liverpool is a wonderful part of the UK in which to live with many of the nation’s greatest attractions right on the doorstep or a short trip away. In spite of the bustling art and culture scene and the city’s maritime history, everyone pines for a change of scenery and why should Liverpudlians be any different?
Luckily for those who live in the North West of England, Liverpool’s John Lennon Airport is connected to numerous cities on the continent and exotic destinations further afield. Now is a great time to consider booking as several low-cost carriers recently announced their 2012 holiday deals, meaning that a break between January and March could be the perfect start to what looks set to be a great year for the UK.
With the Olympics rolling into the English capital in July, if you’re into your sport and were among the lucky few to secure tickets, a break earlier in the year will most likely already be on your agenda.
The European continent is now more accessible than ever and there are many former Capitals of Culture to explore. Istanbul in Turkey won the coveted award in 2010 and boasts a vast array of delights for visitors. Soak in the sights of the nation’s esteemed Byzantine and Ottoman architecture and relax in traditional Turkish baths, which are an indulgence not to be missed.
If you’re travelling in February, why not synchronise your trip with !f Istanbul film festival, which is widely regarded as one of the most important film festivals in Europe for independent film. If you’re looking for a white New Year, Istanbul is a safe bet with heavy snow a common occurrence in January and February.
Back in 2000, Prague took home the accolade and is a city that has subsequently rapidly increased in popularity (it’s now the sixth most visited city in Europe). Nestled in the North-West of the Czech Republic, Prague boasts a wealth of tourist attractions.
Walk around Old Town Square and stop at the Astronomical Clock, take in the sights of Charles Bridge and the Lennon Wall, and no cultural trip would be complete without a visit to the Dancing House; named after famed dancing duo Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. Better known for its cheap Majorca holidays, a popular nation with many winning cities is Spain, seeing Santiago de Compostela, Salamanca and Madrid crowned European Capitals of Culture in the past 20 years. The winner back in 2004, Madrid is bursting with life: learn the art of flamenco dance and song from the Andlucían gypsies, while a visit to the Prado Museum to view Goya is highly recommended.
Sample the local vermouth to wash down the vast array of tapas dishes you’ll find everywhere in the city and if you’re really adventurous head to the Museo del Jamón, where your description of seeing a plethora of ham will make for great stories when you return home.
If Europe’s cities don’t take your fancy, several budget airlines now fly to a variety of exciting destinations on the outskirts of the continent such as, Jordan, Cyprus and Israel. For those determined to get as far away as possible for their buck, and to warmer climes, consider holidays to Egypt, or Moroccan adventures to experience a taste of North African culture.
With a destination for every interest and cultural pursuit, Europe really is one of the most diverse places to explore and there is bound to be a place that will win your vote.
