Plant lovers are better in the bedroom, according to research by a dating website.

In the study of 10,000 users, 82% said that a green-fingered partner would make love bloom and they would be more likely to continue dating a new beau.

But the MySingleFriend.com love-seekers said they would end a relationship their partner's plant died.

Channel Four's Property Ladder presenter Sarah Beeny is the founder of the online dating service. She said: "We all know that keeping a cute pet can be a great pulling tool for showing your softer side.

"But this research shows that singles who want to get the edge in the dating game should really think about opening their hearts and homes to a houseplant."

Exotic plant owners of yuccas and palms were seen as being especially adveturous with their partners, said 44% of singletons.

Those who kept blossoming plants such as Orchid and hyacinth lovers were seen as nurturing and thoughful partners by 51% of respondants.

But the daters may be unlucky in love if they find a someone who has ivy and peace lillies, who are viewed by 52% of people as strong and independent.

The research was carried out by the Flower Council of Holland and the dating website, which claims to have "banished the stigma associated with online dating and innovated a modern approach to finding likeminded people".

Manirma Vries of the Flower Council of Holland said: "Houseplants don’t just look great but they bring great benefits to their owners such as cleaning the air, reducing stress and making us generally healthier and happier people.

"Now this research shows that they can even boost your love life too.

"Whether you are married, single or something in between, investing in a houseplant will provide you with a brilliant relationship that will keep you smiling for years."

The two organisations are celebrating by giving people the chance to find their perfect green-fingered match and pick up a plant at the same time.

Anyone can attend a free dating night with free bar on Thursday 29th September at Ness Botanical Gardens in Neston Wirral from 7pm to 9pm.
