The relaunched club Eric's has promised to bring ground-breaking acts like the original 1970s venue did and Trombone Shorty is one of them.

Troy Andrews is a musical prodigy for whom words like 'virtuoso' and 'icon' are used.

As a four year-old he earned his nickname carrying trombone twice the size of him around the ghetto streets of Treme in New Orleans' 6th ward.

His trumpet playing brother James, himself known as "Satchmo of the Ghetto", started Troy playing "the world's smallest trumpet" by the age of three.

By the time he was six, the pint-sized prodigy was playing in a funk band in clubs in the southern city renowned for its blues and jazz.

Now 25, Troy is a Grammy nominated artist who has a long list of rock star fans, like Lenny Kravitz, Bono and The Edge.

The U2 frontman and guitarist saw 12 year-old Shorty play in New Orleans in 1998. "We walked in and the place was jumping," said The Edge.

"There was this little funk band but they were all playing brass instruments, which is something I'd never heard of or seen before.

"We were just mesmerized by him. I ended up with Bono, after a few tequilas, dancing with a bunch of girls on the top of the bar. It was one of those sort of nights."

The prodigal songwriter and multi-instrumentalist has earned unanimous raves all over the world with his patented high energy 'SUPAFUNKROCK' sound.

His 2010 release of 'Backatown' spent 10 weeks at #1 on Billboard's Contemporary Jazz Chart and still reigns in the top 10 over a year after its release.

But Shorty has enlisted a little help from his friends for his new album 'For True' which features guitarists Jeff Beck, Kravitz and Warren Haynes along with 'cowboy-rocker' Kid Rock.

"There was excitement from everywhere when we toured last year," said Shorty.

"We did over 200 shows in the last year and a half and every night we allowed the music to take us over. Musically and creatively, we wanted to shoot for some different things."

"We allowed each one of the band members to bring their influences and taste in music into our music. Anything we hear or are influenced by, it naturally comes out in what we're trying to do. It's just our sound, and it happened naturally."

Trombone Shorty will play Eric's on Friday 23rd September. Tickets are £20.
