Liverpool Harmonic Gospel Choir have given their first Christmas concert as an independent choir.

The community choir broke away from the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Society earlier this year after they lost funding for their longstanding musical project – ending a 16-year partnership.

Tyndale Thomas MBE, a pioneer of British Gospel music and Director of arts education company, Urban Voice, spoke of his “immense pride” after the group's first performance at the Capstone Theatre, on Shaw Street, Liverpool.

Mr Thomas said: “It’s been a long journey getting here. I think we’re doing well.

“For many years, we have worked hard to inspire a love of Gospel music in the Liverpool community – and we hope that this will continue now we are an independent choir.”

The Christmas concert was an important first step in the gospel choir’s solo journey.

The fifty-strong choir raised the roof with a rousing collection of Christmas carols and gospel songs.

The audience of 180 cheered as the merry singers seamlessly turned gentle acapella into delightful disco, giving old classics like ‘Joy To The World’ and ‘Down By The Riverside’ an upbeat, modern twist.

Adam Davenport, 27, came along to cheer on his dad, Paul, and step-mum, Barbara, who have sung in the choir for many years.

Adam said: “Liverpool Harmonic Gospel Choir always put on a good show – they have lots of fun on stage and know how to keep their audience entertained.”

Helen Renner, one of the Founder Members of the choir, added: “We are delighted that the concert was such a success, as it’s the first event we’ve organised from scratch.

"It’s all so exciting, we’re looking forward to the future - to more concerts, community events and weddings.”

Fellow member Beryl Henderson also added: “We might even sing at Prince William’s wedding or the Olympics – depends on who’ll have us!”

Sister Carol Birch and Sister Helena Flynn, from St Joseph’s Convent, Broadgreen, who came along to the Capstone concert, said they would definitely be coming to future performances.

Sister Flynn said: “At first I wasn’t quite sure what to expect but I must say I’ve really enjoyed myself.

"Gospel music is so powerful when you hear it live – I wouldn’t hesitate in coming again."

Sister Birch added: “The choir have sent me out on a high – I’ll be singing all the way home.”
