40 Young Deaf and Disabled people in Merseyside are being offered the chance to take part in the London 2012 Olympics.

DaDa – Disability and Deaf Arts - are working in partnership with mygames (powered by v) to recruit young volunteers to get involved with DaDaFest International 2010.

The programme calls on young people to undertake exciting volunteering projects in the community that promote and celebrate the values of the 2012 Olympic Games, values that include friendship, respect, excellence, equality and determination.

mygames is funded and powered by v, the National Youth Volunteers Service. v has awarded DaDa – Disability and Deaf Arts a grant to fund the Youth Volunteer Programme and was chosen by v for its imaginative approach to working with Young People, its fresh ideas and its commitment to embracing the opportunities created by 2012.

DaDaFest International 2010 will be featuring artists taking part in the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad. The four-year programme is the largest cultural celebration in the history of the modern Olympic and Paralympic Games, designed to give everyone in the UK a chance to become a part of London 2012.

Alison Jones, Youth Volunteer Project Manager at DaDaFest International 2010 said: “We wanted to give deaf and disabled young people in Merseyside a chance to become involved in not only DaDaFest International 2010, but also to become a part of history in the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad.

"Working with mygames (powered by v) will help volunteers develop their skills, while making a meaningful difference to their community. The volunteers will be involved in a range of roles including researchers, advocates, decision makers, leaders, flash mob participants, festival promoters, ambassadors, exhibition invigilators, information assistants, tour guides and technicians.”

The programme is part of a unique collaboration of 20 innovative charities across England, who have come together to deliver mygames (powered by v). The programmes will turbo-boost the impact of the Olympics & Paralympics across England and in Merseyside.

The nationwide mygames (powered by v) programme will provide wide-ranging volunteering opportunities for 10,000 young people. Projects will focus around the themes of Education, Culture, Environment, Health and Sport.

Terry Ryall, v’s Chief Executive, said: “v is delighted to award DaDa this grant to support volunteering among Deaf and Disabled 16-25s. We are committed to strengthening the role of young people in society. mygames (powered by v) is a fantastic way to harness the talents, energy and enthusiasm of a new generation of young people.”

The organisers hope to tap in to a recent survey on attitudes to 2012 which showed that a third of people in the UK say they would give up their time for an Olympic inspired activity. Among young people, there was even greater enthusiasm, with 48 per cent saying they would give up their time, according to the DCMS survey.

DaDa is now looking to recruit young volunteers aged 16-25 for the project – to volunteer contact Alison Jones by email: youthvolunteer@dadahello.com tel: 0151 707 1733, fax: 0151 708 9355, minicom: 0151 706 0365 or by visiting www.vinspired.com
