Merseyside Dance Initiative (MDI) and the Merseyside Dance Promoters Network (MDPN) are delighted to bring the world renowned Joel Hall Dancers to the Floral Pavilion.
The Floral Pavilion, New Brighton, will welcome the Joel Hall Dancers on Tuesday 7th & Wednesday 8th September.
MDI can exclusively announce the full programme of breathtaking dance works, which the Joel Hall Dancers will perform at their only European date of 2010.
This world class performance will feature some of Joel Hall’s most exciting and memorable choreography including awe-inspiring pieces such as the award winning ‘In the Shadow of Nina Simone,’ a tribute to the legendary performer and songwriter Nina Simone, Compassion, a commemorative work dedicated to the AIDS pandemic, and ‘El Gato Negro,’ from 1992, which features a house mix of music by artists such as CeCe Penniston, Zig Zag, Nightmares on Wax and Black Sheep.
There will also be an opportunity to witness works from other celebrated American choreographers including Flight by William Gill and Eleven Years After by James Morrow.
In the Shadow of Nina Simone is a collaborative work by Joel Hall and Paul Sanasardo. This wonderful work came as a result of a conversation between two old friends both choreographers that admired the world of the ‘High Priestess of Soul’.
Joel explains:
"I chose to thread Nina’s music to take our audience on a journey. Nina Simone seemed to be moving in a similar direction through her work with Verve records.
"Though her music remains timeless, she was a pioneer who was always searching for new ways to present her music. I chose the closing of In the Shadow of Nina Simone for this program because I know how much she is loved throughout the world."
Sweets for the Suite by Joel Hall is compilation of three duets each exploring the dynamics of relationships. In these relationships we discover secrets and untold even more that would unfold within our worlds. Each duet was choreographed for separate Valentine’s Day performances. Sweets for the Suite, is an ongoing work in progress that will develop into a full-length evening of Valentine duets.
Flight by William Gill is a fusion of Jazz, Horton, Ballet, and African dance styles. The piece begins with “Angels Blessings.”
A trio of women bless the start of the journey using traditional Horton and lyrical Ballet movements.
The second section, “Prepare to Fly,” showcases three couples preparing to start an adventure to an unknown whimsical land. The women, flirty and inviting pull their partners along willingly, but reluctantly.
The last section, “Takeoff,” is a high energy, full throttle fusion of movements using the full company.
Eleven Years After by James Morrow explores the dimensions of reality via the politics of identity while investigating the many facets of perfection and perdition.
These two concepts between human beings and their Gods have emerged through time into an intricate labyrinth that questions the belief systems of morality, sexuality, the relationship between the voice, (i.e. music) the body and religion.
This all female quintet weaves in and out of solo, duet, trio and group work.
Compassion by Joel Hall was created during the AIDS pandemic in the American population.
A couple who come together to dance their life story at how beautiful life has been as then life is swept away from one and the other left to carry on feeling that true love will cross his or her path again.
The company performed this piece 20 years ago in Liverpool and have decided to perform it for their returning performance, as the situation in the world has changed but not the Compassion.
El Gato Negro by Joel Hall is a work inspired by club and house music. With Chicago being the global catalyst of house music, I developed a piece around the cool black cats that would dance the night away.
Finally, dawn comes round, the patrons leave the club rolling out like tumbleweed. This piece is about the all night forays into the club world with the origins of house music at the Warehouse owned by DJ Frankie Knuckles.
Joel Hall states:
“If you’ve never seen a jazz dance performance, you’re in for a real treat. If you’ve seen other companies perform jazz dance, then you’re in for a real awakening!
"Spend an evening with us and we guarantee to awaken the dancer in everyone’s soul. A performance by Joel Hall Dancers takes an audience to the edge of their seats, providing an artistic experience that moves the heart and soul.”
