Liverpool’s Isla Gladstone Conservatory celebrated its first birthday in style this month with a special anniversary event for family, friends and local residents.
The event featured live entertainment and music throughout the evening from singer Mike Powell as well as fire breathers, latino dancers and a free casino in Kemps Bistro.
The special anniversary event follows celebrations at the conservatory earlier this month when the great grandchildren of historic British Prime Minister Sir William Gladstone, Francis and Penny Gladstone visited the venue to unveil a plague to mark the occasion.
The Victorian Conservatory, which opened in August 2009 following the regeneration of Stanley Park, had lay derelict for 30 years before it underwent a massive £12 million restoration programme to restore it to its former glory.
One year on, the sympathetic restoration has resulted in the conservatory becoming one of the North West’s most exclusive and unique wedding and event venues. Kemps Bistro, which is situated beneath the conservatory, also offers a popular and memorable meeting place for the community.
Managing Director, Gemma Hindley, who was recently awarded with a Daily Post award for Women Achieving in Business, said: “I’m elated with the success of the conservatory since it opened one year ago. The venue has become a popular visitor attraction because of its superb location and historic links with the Gladstone family. From July to December 2009, the venue achieved 15,240 visitors and these figures have now almost doubled in 2010.”
She added: “We wanted to thank the local community for all their support by hosting an event which all local residents can attend and help celebrate the success of the conservatory together with us.”
Councillor Tim Moore, Cabinet member for the Environment on Liverpool City Council, commented: "The Isla Gladstone Conservatory has been a huge success since it was restored to its former glory. It has rightly re-established itself as the centre-piece of Stanley Park, and it is great news that it is proving so popular."
