The Everyman and Playhouse theatres are providing the opportunity for young people aged between 15 and 19 to perform with world renowned Brazilian group AfroReggae.
The group, made up of drummers, dancers and circus performers are looking to set-up a Liverpool company of performers harnessing the local talent in the city.
There is an open call for the young people to join in a number of workshops throughout the city this week where they will be introduced to AfroReggae’s exciting an energising performance style before being taught all the skills they will need to form the Liverpool branch of this world wide phenomenon.
Originating from the favelas in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1993, AfroReggae have gone from performing in their neighbourhoods to playing some of the most prestigious venues in the world from Carnegie Hall to the Barbican. In 2006 the band opened for the Rolling Stones’ concert to two million people on Copacabana Beach.
It is perhaps fitting that the Brazilian outfit are now beginning their search in a city that has given so much music to the world to form a new branch of their UK network.
Those taking advantage of this amazing opportunity will soon have the chance to play in front of their first big crowd as the new Liverpool AfroReggae group will perform in Williamson Square on Saturday 7 August.
The Liverpool AfroReggae group will then continue to rehearse and perform in Liverpool’s communities and city centre spaces with their Brazilian mentors from Wednesday 4 to Saturday 21 August, culminating in a landmark open air performance on Everton Park as part of Out of the Blue Festival.
To take advantage of this opportunity all you need to do is be aged 15 to 19 and take part in 2 – 5 of the workshops in the community per week, along with the special rehearsal and performance at the Playhouse on Saturday 7 August. For further information contact afrorggae@everymanplayhouse.com.
