The Liverpool Tate Gallery has announced details its latest programme of exhibitions and events.

Liverpool Biennial: Touched
Admission free
18 September – 28 November 2010

Touched, the International exhibition for the 6th Liverpool Biennial, celebrates a decade of bringing new art to the UK through curatorial collaboration. Conceived as a ‘sculptural happening,’ Tate Liverpool’s exhibition features on-going live interventions and appearances by artists, performing objects, as well as installations and sculptures to be explored by visitors.

The theme ‘touched’ not only suggests the idea of being emotionally affected, but also suggests the kind of proximity, action and physical contact you would not expect to encounter in a museum or art gallery. Since the emergence of challenging and rebellious artistic strategies in the 1960s, international artists have questioned the idea that visual art should be static, sanctified, and presented on a wall or plinth to be viewed from a distance. The International exhibition at Tate Liverpool, curated by Peter Gorschlüter, makes reference to this period in art history to explore the ways in which contemporary artists continue to respond to and build upon these ideas today.

Touched at Tate Liverpool aims to connect explicitly with the concept and mission of the Biennial as an exhibition situated in the public realm. For the first time, admission to Tate Liverpool’s exhibition is free of charge, and the gallery will host a Biennial visitor centre to facilitate visitors in gaining the most from the festival.

TATE COLLECTION AT TATE LIVERPOOL
DLA Piper Series: The Sculpture of Language
From 14 June 2010
Admission Free

Sponsored by DLA Piper

Taking an ambitious and revolutionary look at the history of modern and contemporary sculpture, this major re-hang of Tate Liverpool’s collection display examines the trajectory of artistic innovation in the twentieth-century and beyond. DLA Piper Series: This is Sculpture explores the story of modern and contemporary sculpture, featuring masterpieces from the Tate Collection by artists such as Sir Jacob Epstein, Henry Moore, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Joseph Beuys, Gilbert & George, Anthony Gormley and Julian Opie. Sculpture in the form of object, installation, assemblage and ready-made will sit alongside more surprising forms, such as painting, video, photography, language and performance.

Key figures from the cultural arena have co-curated sections of the display: the Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy, artist Michael Craig Martin and architect Wayne Hemingway and his son Jack.

The Sculpture of Language, curated by Carol Ann Duffy is the latest addition to the DLA Piper Series (2nd Floor Riverside Gallery, free). Presenting artworks created in a range of media from 1699 to the present day, Duffy's personal selection creates a multi-layered and poetic display that invites us on a journey towards a universal notion of language, from ‘before words’ to ‘when words come into being’.

Isabel and Alfredo Aquilizan who are from the Phillipines are interested in collective experience and memory. They often involve communities and audience in the production of their work. For their Liverpool Biennial work, they have looked at how the life and history of Liverpool people might connect with those living in Australia, where the Aquilizans have lived since 2006. Focusing on the sea as a shared reference, they ask you to think about sea journeys in the making of your boats. Presented together in the final work, your creations will be offered as a meditation on issues such as migration and identity, and ideas of home.
