Sefton launches public art competition

Sefton Arts have launched a borough wide competition to design the artwork that is to be displayed on the building hoardings outside the Southport Cultural Centre until 2012.

A professional company would normally design the hoardings, that enclose the full site in the centre of town, but Sefton Arts have decided to look closer to home for designs that mean something more to the community.

The designs should represent art forms that are to be found at the future Southport Cultural Centre.

These art forms include: worldwide cinema, fine art, community and professional dance and drama, international music, children's theatre, stand up and situational comedy, a bistro and lots more!

Emma Lloyd, Sefton Arts Marketing Manager said:

"The winning designs (one adult and one child's) will be on display to resident and visitors until 2012 and must therefore encompass what the Cultural Centre means to them.

"We want people to be proud of the redevelopment, as when it is open it will be a major part of the cultural offer for the growth in tourism and for residents.

"We want a design that tells visitors what to look forward to, to excite and get people talking about the project.

"If you think you can inspire people and promote Southport Cultural Centre with your flair, we want to see what you can do."

The competition was launched on Friday 30th July and is open to everyone from 2 years onwards.

The designs must be transferable onto large scale as the hoardings are each 8ft by 4ft.

The designs must include the Sefton Arts website, www.seftonarts.co.uk and the logo and box office telephone numbers 01704 540011 / 0151 928 1919.

Entry forms with full terms and conditions of the competition will be available from Friday 30th July and can be picked up from all local libraries, children centres, Crosby Civic Hall and Southport Tourist information Centre.

The winning designs for both the adults and children's competition will be chosen in September and installed on the hoardings in October.
