Artist and poet Alice Lenkiewicz, who lives in Toxteth, has painted six of history’s most profound women for an exhibition at Liverpool Cathedral.
The exhibition was inspired by The Lady Chapel centenary celebrations and the Walking Through Windows production, which took place at the Cathedral in June.
Alice’s research is based on the noble women in the stained glass windows of the Lady Chapel.
Alice said: “As I read about these women I was moved by their courageous and fascinating lives.
“I wanted to portray the lives of the women and to try and capture a particular moment that would have been symbolic for them.”
Alice, who earned her degree and lectured at Edge Hill University in Ormskirk, has recently set up her own non profit making company – The Toxteth Art Gallery.
The six paintings include, Kitty Wilkinson beside the River Mersey, Agnes Jones past and future, Elizabeth Fry and the patchwork quilt, Grace Darling’s heroic rescue, Josephine Butler meets the women of the Oakum rooms and Christina Rossetti: The Annunciation.
One of the six women painted is Agnes Jones, who was described by Florence Nightingale as ‘one of the most valuable lives in England’. She, like Nightingale, was a nurse but died aged 35 from typhus fever after she devoted herself to her work. The painting shows Agnes aged 33, capturing the moment she accepted an invitation from William Rathbone to aid Liverpool Workhouse.
Alice, whose father was also a famous artist - Robert Lenkiewicz, was excited by the chance to look into the lives of these inspiring women.
She added, “I have found creating this exhibition fascinating, looking into the pasts of six wonderful, strong and inspiring women who I feel are role models for today’s' society.”
“The women of The Noble Windows are an inspiration for all women today.”
The press preview of the exhibition takes place at 6.15pm on August 2nd and it will be open to the general public from August 3rd - 27th.
