Rascals raise roof at Liverpool Sound City

The Wirral trio, minus one, seemed to be fading out of peoples minds with their 18 month hiatus due to frontman Miles Kane daliance with a monkey.

That monkey being Alex Turner of the Artic Monkeys, and said daliance being the highly successful Last Shadow Puppets.

Minus one being the drummer Greg Mihall, who had taken ill, only for his replacement of no memorable name to steal the show.

Kane introduced the drummer to the crowd and told everyone that he had only had TWO days to fill in and learn all the turns, which he did effortlessly.

In fact he was amazing. Which is a complement considering some of the complexities of the Rascals tunes.

Kicking off in typically brash style, Kanes voice seems to be a fine combination of John Powers from Cast and his mate Alex Turner.

His vocals certainly filled the Stanley Theatre and had most of the 18-something students in complete rapture.

Although the Rascals tunes have a hard edge to them, with songs such as 'Chills and Fever', it seems like they are missing something.

Whether this is an extra band member or a distinct sound, some of the songs lacked direction and never really seemed to be going anywhere.

It wasn't until they belted out 'All That Jazz' by Echo and The Bunnymen did the crowd come to life. That was the hightlight of the night apart from the last tune which almost ripped the ageing theatres' roof off.

They were ably supported by Bicycle Thieves, who sounded a bit like The Editors, with a little lightening up could cause a few waves.

Go faster were on next. Something like The Wombats......yet on heroin.

The promising Sound of Guns were the last support act on and although they have a very big sound, they sounded too much like U2 and the lead singer either needed to tone it down a bit or the sound engineer need to be shot for putting too much reverb on his mic.
