The Sterlings

As part of the Click Liverpool Live line-up The Sterlings will be bringing their dynamic sound to The Masque on 16th July.

The Sterlings are a three piece Pop-Punk/Rock band hailing from the sunny streets of Liverpool.

Their brand of foot-stomping, anthemic songs has been widely acclaimed by many music industry legends such as Ian McCulloch of Echo and the Bunnymen, as well as Tom Clarke of The Enemy.

The lads have been together for two years, and in that time have assembled a set of absolute belters that have caught the eyes and ears of music lovers everywhere.

The Sterlings are a no-nonsense band who like to keep it short, keep it simple, and keep it LOUD!

Being the local lads that they are the band are looking forward to playing their hometown, as front man Matt Bower says: “It’s always nice to play to a home crowd in whatever game you're in, be it music, football, whatever.

“I think Liverpool crowds are more enthusiastic with regards to getting involved in dancing, singing and stuff. I know a lot of the gigs we’ve done this year around Liverpool have been some of the best we've done.”

For the uninitiated who are not familiar with The Sterlings Matt recommends that you listen to their lyrics, as this is what separates them from a lot of bands.

Matt describes Modern Age as his favourite song, lyrically, by the band; as it contains a social commentary with bucket loads of attitude.

In regards to their overall song-writing structure, he continues: “I'd say to listen to the lyrics, the music is fast and loud for a lot of our songs but the lyrics mean something too which is something that is lacking with a lot of bands - I reckon.

"Listen to the lyrics and have a little dance and a jump about.”

And with The Sterlings emphasis on the importance of their lyrics it comes as no surprise that Matt himself was influenced by two song writers who excelled in lyrical craftsmanship themselves – Paul Weller and Noel Gallagher. As matt explains:

“Weller has just done it all, he went from the angry young mod to this kind of elder statesman-like figure and he's written great tunes in whatever style of music he's tried his hand at.

“And I grew up during the Britpop era and Oasis were the boys so Noel's well up there too.”

So, apart from some damn good lyrics what else can we expect from the gig? New songs? Cheeky surprises?

He added: “There are a couple of songs we’re working on, whether or not they will be done in time we'll have to wait and see.

“But we will be playing our latest addition to the set, our twisted cover of Johnny Cash's Ring of Fire.

“People sometimes wince when they hear that a punk band cover a country song, but it sounds amazing and it’s a good one to get the crowds involved in too.”

Not overly superstitious the band don’t go through any rigorous pre-show rituals, instead they opt for a more relaxed approach and have a ‘few lagers’ and the first thing they do when they come off stage? Matt tells us it’s ‘more lagers and a bit of a party, definitely’.

The Sterlings may play hard but they definitely work hard too; they have a single and album release lined-up, along with a UK and Ireland tour in the pipeline.

Matt said: “We recently agreed a deal with Anti-Pop records to release a single with an album to follow.

“We are releasing Stop the Press! as an A side with the Ring of Fire cover as the B-side, we don’t have a release date as yet, but the tracks are recorded and both sound mega so we cant wait to get it out.

“We are planning to tour the UK and Ireland towards the end of the year to promote the album.”

Whatever you do, don’t miss The Sterlings when they play Click Liverpool Live at The Masque on 16th July!
