Hip-Hop legend, Gil Scott-Heron kicked-off the countdown to Liverpool Sound City in grand style when he performed at the Philharmonic Hall on Thursday 29 April for the festival’s launch event.
Gil was the ultimate crowd pleaser to the sell-out Liverpool crowd and provided a taste of what is to come at the top UK music festival and conference which officially begins in just over a weeks time.
Scott-Heron’s music features a unique fusion of jazz, blues and soul music as well as his famous politically influenced lyrics and concern with social issues.
This led to him being hailed alongside contemporaries like Marvin Gaye and Curtis Mayfield as a true legend of seventies soul and funk.
Albums like Pieces of a Man and Winter in America proved to be a vital influence on hip hop and his most well known song, The Revolution Will Not Be Televised continues to be a key song in the rap canon.
Liverpool Sound City Director, Dave Pichilingi said:
“There was no more amazing way to start the countdown to our main festival later this month than with a rare performance from this living legend.
"He held the audience in the palm of his hands as he weaved through his amazing back catalogue of music and poetry that included Pieces of a Man and Winter in America.”
Also recently announced is the special concert by the Sense of Sound Choir featuring soul singer Jennifer John.
The company renowned for its distinctive vocal arrangements will perform stunning interpretations of Burt Bacharach to contemporary urban soul.
It also has a host of special guests blues legend Connie Lush, guitar virtuoso Neil Campbell and rising star hip hop star Kof on Wednesday 19th May at The Bluecoat.
