The Envy is a brand spanking new four piece alternative rock band from Liverpool.
Band members Jordan, Paul, Luke and Lee possess a lyrical maturity that reaches way beyond their years; songs such as We’ll Last Forever highlight their song-writing panache.
The band also prove they are no one trick ponies, We’ll Last Forever compared to You Drive Me Crazy emphasize The Envy’s ability to chill out and rock out in equal measure.
All of this is even more impressive due to the fact that the band is barely into their late teens.
The Envy first formed during a GSCE music project, which then saw them progress into a fully fledged band.
"At first we decided to get together just for a GCSE music project and we were going to finish after that, but we thought 'why just leave it at that?' and decided to go and write songs and play some gigs and it took off from there".
As a relatively new band I asked The Envy how they would describe their sound to people who haven't heard them play before. And what bands have influenced them musically?
"Our sounds different; basically a darker mix of indie and alternative rock
"We all have our own individual influences but mainly bands such as Muse, Arctic Monkeys and White Lies".
The Envy will shortly be supporting fellow Liverpudlian band The Temps this July, so who are the bands favourite upcoming Liverpool bands are at the moment?
"We have a few, but mainly, The Temps, Alexis Blue and The LadyKillers".
Now The Envy have some great gigs lined- up in Liverpool’s Korova and O2 Academy, they are set to play Manchester’s Night ‘n’ Day café and they recently performed in Wigan -but where is their favourite place to play?
"It has to be the O2 Academy in Liverpool. It has a great atmosphere, great lights, and great sound".
Many bands tend to become superstitious before going on stage, so I asked The Envy if they have any pre- gig rituals before going on stage.
"Not really but Luke (drummer) tends to forget all the songs just before we go out on stage".
And what is the most embarrassing thing that has happened on -stage?
"When Paul (lead guitar) went on to his knees for a solo and came back up and his cable came out of his guitar still during the solo (in the cavern club!)"
As The Envy look forward to a bright future, I ask the band to reminisce over the past few months and tell me what has been the highlight of their year so far?
"We haven't played many gigs so far this year, but playing The Clubhouse in Stockport was amazing, we will definitely be going back there!"
Looking to the future, we can expect lots of new material from the band and plenty of gigs. As the band explain:
"We always have new stuff on the go, just guitar parts and melodies so far though, still have a bit to go.
"We are just going to be focusing on writing new songs and playing more gigs for our college years".
