Africa Oye Festival returns bigger and better than ever

Long running celebration of African music and culture; the Africa Oyé festival returns to Sefton Park this June.

On Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th of June, the park will play host to some of the best music, food, drink, arts and fashion from across Africa and beyond, seeking to highlight the variety which makes this continent one of the most vibrant and inspiring in the world.
This year the line-up includes the Mlimani Park Orchestra, Fatoumata Diawara, Cheny, Bonga, with many more still to be confirmed. The Oyé Village will be returning, where festival goers can purchase alcohol, and long time supporter “News from Nowhere” will have merchandise from all the performing artists and much more on sale.

The festival is a truly international event that harnesses the spirit of multiculturalism and tolerance. It has played host to artists from right across the continent of Africa, and also programmes music from South America and the Caribbean with Salsa and Reggae always popular additions to the festivities.
This will be the 20th annual Oyé festival to take place in Liverpool. It began as a series of small gigs in the city centre in 1992 and has gone from strength to strength, having to move to Sefton Park in 2002 to cope with demand. It attracted an audience of over £50,000 people last year, and generated over £1.3 million in extra income for the city. Despite cuts to both budgets, Arts Council England, and Liverpool City Council will be contributing funding towards Africa Oyé this year.

As a result of this success, the festival this year will be enclosed for the first time to assist with the security of the event. This will also mean an increased number of toilets, a bigger and better Oyé village and a larger main stage. All of which can be enjoyed for only £5 per day.

Africa Oyé is a registered charity and any profits raised from admission to the festival will be re-invested into the festival for 2012.
