Sandra Bullock wins Best Actress at Oscar's

Sandra Bullock won the Best Actress prize at last night’s Academy Awards ceremony.

The 45-year-old received her first ever Oscar nomination for The Blind Side in which she portrayed Leigh Anne Tuohy, a woman who takes in a homeless boy and helps him change the course of his life.

Since it was announced she was in the running for the prestigious prize, Sandra had constantly downplayed her chance of winning. She was up against Dame Helen Mirren, Carey Mulligan, Gabourey Sibide and Meryl Streep, and paid tribute to the other actresses in her acceptance speech.

“Did I really earn this, or did I just wear you all down?” she joked as she took to the stage.

Sandra added she “fell in love” with her fellow nominees, singling out Meryl – who she famously locked lips with at the People’s Choice Awards, with both actresses joking they were bitter rivals in the run up to the ceremony – as a “good kisser” and calling her “my lover”.

She then jokingly thanked all those Hollywood stars who have been nasty to her in the past, revealing George Clooney was among them as he once pushed her in a swimming pool. Sandra would not be drawn on the reason why.

On a more serious note, the star became weepy as she thanked her late mother Helga D. Meyer, a German opera singer, for helping her build her career.

“Thank you for not letting me ride in cars with boys until I was 18,” Sandra said. “And for reminding her daughters that there's no race, no religion, no class system, no colour, nothing, no sexual orientation that makes us better than anyone else. We are all deserving of love.”

Before the awards took place, Sandra insisted she was relaxed and excited. She enjoyed getting ready for the ceremony, and revealed she was not concerned about having to fit her acceptance speech into 45 seconds should she take home the prize. “Look at how fast I talk, I can cram a life time of work in 45 seconds,” she said.

The star had previously revealed the only thing causing her worry was her shoes – she was petrified they would get caught in her dress and make her fall over.

Sandra made history with her win, as she became the first star to pick up a Golden Raspberry Award – also known as a Razzie – and an Oscar over the same weekend.

The Razzies are held the day before the Oscars each year and celebrate the worst films and stars in Hollywood. Sandra won two on the dubious honours, Worst Actress for All About Steve and Worst Screen Couple for her partnership with Bradley Cooper in the same movie.
