Liverpool Community College’s Be Involved team are competing with other UK College’s in a national initiative to design and sell Olympic-themed underwear and tackle global poverty.
The ‘Pantrepreneur Challenge,’ which was launched by founder of fair trade underwear brand ‘Pants to Poverty’ Ben Ramsden, offers creative students the chance to design, produce and sell Olympic-themed pants, with the money raised tackling poverty across the world.
Students Becky Dutson, Erin Carberry, Danny Middleborough and Joe Kelly form the Liverpool Community College’s team, and have taken on various roles from designing the pants, to preparing their business plan and marketing.
They have also created a video pitch to submit to Ben Ramsden entitled ‘Seeing is Believing’ which merges the iconic London architecture of Big Ben with Liverpool’s iconic Liver Building to reflect the involvement of Liverpool’s young people in the Olympics.
Ben Ramsden will unveil the winning team from each of the 15 participating colleges in London on 12th June based on the best design, most commercially viable business plan and which team sold the most pants.
The winning team will travel to India and see the Pants to Poverty work in action.
Melanie Williams, Be Involved co-ordinator at Liverpool Community College, said: “The ‘Pantrepreneur Challenge’ is both a unique and fun challenge with a serious purpose that reinforces our commitment to being an entrepreneurial college.
“I am certain that the initiative will inspire our students, staff and partners to take part in challenging poverty and supporting our young people’s potential by investing in the team’s design. This initiative highlights the importance of our role in supporting key entrepreneurial skills and mindset by empowering our students to develop new and creative pathways to their own employment.”
Ben Ramsden, CEO Pants to Poverty added: “For young people starting their careers in today’s economic climate, it is more important than ever to encourage them to start their own businesses and get experience whilst at college."
“This competition helps students raise their ‘underwearness’ by becoming a real entrepreneur who can liberate the power in their pants,” he added.
The Be Involved team will be selling their ‘Seeing is Believing’ pants across all College sites and will be selling at Stanley Street and Bold Street markets. The team is also looking to make partnerships with local, independent clothes shops to sell the pants to the public. Sales must end on the 10th June.
